Yachting World Scow

March 10th, 2008 by neil · 3 Comments

David Henshall, a regular poster to the Classic and Vintage Racing Dinghy Association forum has unearthed some great footage of a Yachting World Scow from the early 1960s. Excellent footage of a great boat.

I was sailing a fleetwind at the tudor sailing club in langstone harbour when the yachting world scow appeared. I was so mesmerised by the boat that I built an 18 foot version that was hopelessly overweight. Mike Tremlett himself offered advice on building the full size version, and even prepared the centreboards for me. The project never progressed and my original drawings were lent to a member of stokes bay sailing club, never to be seen again. Now at the age of 67, I sail a vintage fireball, with my wife, at Thornbury sailing club on the river severn.

I had a Yachting world scow on Oulton broad, some years ago,it was number 8 called Voodoo.

I raced in the allcomers at the Waveney and Oulton Broad yacht Club, with a large handicap.

It was great fun but was quite a handfull, it seemed at times to have a mind of its own!

I was suprised when I tapped in yachting World Scow to see the results, it brought back some fond memories.

It was built locally to full size, alas on a windy night it blew over and broke its back.

It was restored after I sold it and never seen again.

I have a group of friends that own one. It needs a bit of work but is basically sound……a real challenge and needs saving!!
